Search for Ideas

I found these images and thought they were really powerful. I love the idea of using biological diagrams / models / equipment in some way. However not sure how I could convert this into an idea or image that would convey the Body Shop principles.

Could use dissected animals / mice in jars etc as a "not at" The Body Shop type idea but prob too similar to shock tactics used in the past.

TRANSPARENCY

I had an idea based around the principle that the Body Shop have that "We will never sell false promises or play on insecurities in order to sell our products". They claim that their labeling and promotion is all honest and based in fact not fiction. Thinking about how to show this I hit on the word "transparent",.. they wish to appear to be transparent in their labeling,.. their values .. etc. They have nothing to hide.

Could play with images of transparency.. using glass etc. Woman in glass box? Clear packaging?

Could use idea of having nothing to hide.. images of secret places usually hiden.. bedrooms, under bed,.. locked drawers,.. toilets. Perhaps images where wall etc is cut away and we see what is inside. Could show into home etc. Poss use Gregory Crewdson style imagery??

Transparency??

Barbara Kruger

Thinking about opinionated imagery and use of text with image led me straight to look at the work of Barbara Kruger. She addresses a lot of similar issues to the Body Shop's Manifesto,.. those to do with self esteem and self image and the effect of advertising on the image of "perfection" in women. She is one of the most effective artists working with text and image and I think this kind of work really fits the style of opinionated social imagery the Body Shop want for their new campaign.

The image "Memory is your image of perfection" is extremely relevant to my ideas and got me thinking about using a sequence of sentences about image of perfection,.. perhaps leading to the final one about

"Your image of beauty is distorted"

Could use images of distortion,.. perhaps place distorting fair ground mirrors into the streets for the public to interact with.

Inspiration

Bus stop ads and other ambient media could be a good way to draw public attantion to the new campaign.

Masks have a lot of links to the idea of self image and beauty.

I chose this image because it seems to have links to the idea of "it’s not just about looking beautiful. It’s about exuding a vibrant attitude to life."

I like the idea of using objects to represent something else.

Shock factor can be effective but maybe over done. Satire / Humour maybe more effective today?

Suggestive imagery or images that make the viewer do a double take are definitely more effective.

I quite like the idea of using toys etc in this way,.. similar to the Body Shop "Ruby" posters

Could be interesting to look at more playboy ads and posters,.. similar imagery but totally opposite philosophy to Body Shop so could use this in some way.

Strong and controversial imagery is going to get attention and be remembered.
Previous campaigns from the Body Shop:

Active Self Esteem - Opinionated, strong message

Use of ambient media to convey message

Working alongside Amnesty International

Self Esteem - building healthier ideas of beauty, quite controversial

D&AD BRIEF

D&AD BRIEF

Starting on a new brief set by D&AD and The Body Shop. Designing an "unconventional brand campaign" to revive the Body Shop's image as the pioneer of ethical beauty. Needs to be opinionated and perhaps slightly controversial.

This blog is going to document my research and progression through this project, alongside my sketchbook,.. as a stand against unnecessary printing and an easy place to link useful research and sites.
